Charleston: King Street and History

On our first full day in Charleston, we started our day shopping on King Street. Larry needed coffee, so we stopped in King's cookies, so he could get an iced coffee. I couldn't resist ordering a pecan praline cookie, especially since I saw them come straight out of the oven--the cookie was devine! We wandered into some of the art galleries and oogled over some of the local art--very tempted to go back and buy some. We also snooped in some of the antique and home stores. We found our way into Charleston Place--a very fancy hotel with high-end designer stores like Gucci, Rolex, and Louis Vuitton. I immediately texted Stephanie and told her about it--she immediately looked it up and booked a stay for her and Michael for this sunmer! They both enjoy high-end places and bougie boutiques, so I knew Charleston Place was for them! We went into Lake and bought a pair of pajamas that Stephanie wants for her birthday. I also looked in several boutiques for an Easter dress, but the ones I liked were $1400+ and way out of my price range. After shopping for 3 hours (I was impressed Larry made it that long), we stopped for lunch at Leon's Oyster Bar. We ordered the hushpuppies with honey butter, which were amazing. Larry ordered the catfish sandwich with a side of scalloped potatoes, and I got the 2 piece white chicken. We sat at the bar next to another young couple who happened to be from Kingsport, TN. We chatted about food (they are opeing a new restaurant in Kingsport) and the must do things in Charleston. They were a sweet couple, and we promised to come try their restaunt this summer when it opens! The food was good--I was only able to eat my chicken wing and a few bites of the potatoes, but Larry devoured the catfish sandwich! Leon's is very good, and I recommend it if you are ever in Charleston! After lunch, we drove out to Sullivan's Island and toured Fort Moultrie and stopped for ice cream at Republic ice cream. Larry loved the fort and told me all about the canons. Sullivan's Island is lovely, and I think on a future trip, I woukd like to stay there. On the drive back, we stopped in MT PLeasant to see the Yorktown--I said it was a big ol' carrier, but Larry explained that today's carriers are twice as big! After a day of exploring, we decided to call it a day and head back to the airBNB for a quiet evening watching movies with takeout for dinner. We are still getting used to the time change, and we are both a little tired. I will close by saying Charleston is the quintessential southern town--large oak trees, azaleas in bloom, beautiful southern homes with working shutters and gas lanterns, and very magnanimous people who are quick to smile and say Howdy! The weather is perfect--mid 60s and blue skies--it was a beautiful and perfect day!
